Cloud-native computing extends cloud best practices to all of IT via declarative layers of abstraction. Edge computing represents the shift in compute resources to the cloud edge (where CDNs position edge servers), the near edge (telco points of presence, IoT gateways, remote office network closets, etc.), and the far edge (mobile devices, IoT sensors and actuators, etc.) Edgeworx provides an open source platform that extends Kubernetes to each edge as appropriate to abstract the underlying hardware and edge-specific operating systems and other infrastructure, thus providing a secure, manageable abstraction for compute across all edge instances.

Securing and managing large numbers of connected devices at the edge is a growing problem among developers, but Silicon Valley-based edge computing startup Edgeworx has come up with a solution.
The company’s technology, the ioFog Platform, open sourced under the Eclipse Foundation, can turn any compute device into an edge software platform.
It makes any Kubernetes distribution edge-aware, allowing developers to create a true cloud-to-edge continuum and deploy applications and microservices from the cloud to any edge device.

Edge computing has become an important trend for the Internet of Things (IoT). Gartner identifies edge computing as one of their top Tech Trends for 2019. Companies implementing IoT solutions are seeing real benefits of processing data on the edge, closer to the ‘things’, before it is sent to the cloud. Confirming this trend, a recent Micron/Forrester survey found in the next three years, 53 percent of respondents expect to be analyzing complex data sets at the edge. This is why some have made the bold prediction that ‘the edge will eat the cloud. ‘

As more enterprises and startups look for ways to increase revenue, reduce costs and help customers, the edge is becoming a strategic focal point; however, many are challenged to find methodologies and solutions that support these edge focused initiatives.
While many VCs have publicly declared they are working on diversity initiatives, that dialog is “just lip service,” said Anthony Zhang, RateMyInvestor’s chief growth officer.
Those in the VC-seeking trenches echo the report’s findings, with some industry advocates saying the responsibility lands particularly hard on women to address the issue.
Processing large amounts of sensor data at the edge reduces network bandwidth costs and cloud data storage costs. Edge computing allows for the analysis and filtering of data closer to the sensors so only the relevant data is sent to the cloud.
Edge computing is a key trend this year in the IoT industry. This past week, Baidu announced a new open-source project, called OpenEdge, that targets edge computing. OpenEdge is certainly not the first open-source project for edge computing. Over the last number of years, there have been many new open-source projects started to address edge computing. Therefore, I thought it would be interesting to see how some projects are doing in terms of community and popularity. It appears most of the projects in the survey have an active core contributor community. Most projects are supported by a main contributing company and accept PR and issues from the wider community. Over time, it will be interesting to see if one of these projects does develop a more robust open-source community of contributors. The edge has become a market-defining trend for this decade. While companies have been deploying solutions in the field for quite some time, these have traditionally been vertically integrated, one-off, stove-piped solutions running on dedicated hardware.
Today, facing massive volumes of data, increased security concerns, and the need for real-time processing, companies recognize it is necessary to do at least some of their computing at the edge.
Another one is the telecommunications industry. The reason they’re adopting edge computing and IoT faster than others is that they’re at the center of the data flow for everybody, everywhere.
